    Original English Mini-Lessons

These four short passages focus on corrected times, locations, contrasts and number dictation. Each includes questions, a reference translation and explained answers. The passages are original practice material. Browser speech is synthesized, not a human recording, and its stress or intonation is not the only valid model.

    Departure Time and Meeting Time

Track departure and meeting as separate actions. Do not put the first time you hear into every answer field.

The train leaves at nine, not nine thirty. Let's meet at the station at eight forty-five. Please bring your ticket and a bottle of water.
    1. When does the train actually leave?
    2. When and where should the travelers meet?
    3. Which two things should the listener bring?
    Reference translation and explained answers

    Chinese reference translation

    火车九点出发,不是九点半。我们八点四十五分在车站见吧。请带上你的车票和一瓶水。

    1. Nine o'clock. The phrase not nine thirty rules out 9:30; it does not replace nine with nine thirty.
    2. At the station at 8:45, fifteen minutes before departure. No platform, AM or PM is specified.
    3. A ticket and a bottle of water. Write answers before checking the passage, then repeat only the sentence you are unsure about. On the next attempt, summarize departure and meeting in separate sentences.

    Catch a Corrected Time

Listen for the relationship around but, then distinguish next to from in.

I thought the lesson started at seven, but it starts at seven thirty. The room is upstairs, next to the library.
    1. Whose earlier understanding was seven o'clock? What is the actual time?
    2. Is the classroom inside the library?
    Reference translation and explained answers

    Chinese reference translation

    我原以为课七点开始,但实际上是七点半开始。教室在楼上,图书馆旁边。

    1. The speaker thought the lesson began at seven. The information after but corrects this to seven thirty. Remembering only seven loses the correction.
    2. No. The room is upstairs and beside the library. Next to does not mean in, and no floor number is given. Confirm the time on one pass, then sketch the location on a second pass before checking.

Keep the Negative and the Contrast

The passage is one sentence, so the same passage can be both A and B. The goal is a clear contrast, not ever-faster speech.

I wanted the blue folder, not the green one.
    1. Which color does the speaker want?
    2. What does one refer to, and what changes if not is omitted?
    Reference translation and explained answers

    Chinese reference translation

    我想要的那个文件夹是蓝色的,而不是绿色的。

    1. The blue folder, not the green folder. Make BLUE and GREEN clear and keep the word not audible.
    2. One stands for folder. Dropping not damages the intended negative contrast. Paraphrase the meaning before repeating the whole sentence; do not treat synthesized rhythm as the only model. A separate recording of your own attempt can reveal missing colors, negatives or endings.

Put Numbers in the Right Fields

Use four fields: quantity, day, time and room. The two instances of fifteen have different jobs.

Please bring fifteen printed copies on Thursday. The session starts at nine fifteen in room three.
    1. How many printed copies are needed, and on which day?
    2. When and where does the session start?
    3. Can you decide whether it is morning or evening?
    Reference translation and explained answers

    Chinese reference translation

    请在星期四带来十五份打印件。活动九点十五分在三号房间开始。

    1. Fifteen copies on Thursday. Fifteen is 15, not fifty; Thursday is not Tuesday.
    2. At 9:15 in room three. The first fifteen is a quantity, while the second is the minutes in a time. Do not swap the fields.
    3. No. The passage does not specify AM or PM. Keep the first draft, correct only uncertain fields on a second listen, then restate the instruction in full English sentences.
